United Says American Rejected Merger Approach, Ending Talks
United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby said he approached American Airlines about exploring a merger, but American declined to engage and the effort has ended. Kirby said he believed a combination could win regulatory approval.
Kirby described the proposed tie-up as a growth-focused deal that would expand routes, improve service and help the airlines compete more effectively with foreign carriers.
