US GDP Grows 2% as Investment Offsets Cooler Consumer Spending

businessmacroeconomics 48 posts · 29 accounts

U.S. gross domestic product increased at a 2.0% annualized rate in the first quarter, below the 2.3% forecast, as strong business investment helped offset softer consumer demand. Nonresidential business investment rose 10.4% in the quarter, while consumer spending increased 1.6%, the slowest pace in a year.

March inflation data showed the personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.7% from a month earlier and 3.5% from a year earlier, while core PCE increased 0.3% on the month and 3.2% on the year, matching estimates. Personal income climbed 0.6% in March, above the 0.3% forecast, and personal spending rose 0.9%, in line with expectations.
