Trump Unveils Hormuz Shipping Plan Without Navy Escorts
President Donald Trump said Sunday that the U.S. will begin “Project Freedom” on Monday morning, Middle East time, to help commercial ships from countries not involved in the regional conflict leave the Strait of Hormuz. He described the effort as a humanitarian move to free stranded vessels and crews, said some ships were running low on food and supplies, said U.S. representatives were holding “very positive” discussions with Iran, and warned that any interference would be dealt with forcefully.
Later, a senior U.S. official said Project Freedom is a coordination process through which countries, insurance companies and shipping organizations can move traffic through the strait, and that it does not currently involve U.S. Navy warships escorting vessels. Ebrahim Azizi, a member of Iran’s parliament national security committee, said any U.S. intervention in Hormuz shipping would violate the ceasefire. Oil prices fell more than 2% at Monday’s open after Trump’s announcement.
