Crypto exploits drained about $651 million in April, and the month saw the highest number of hacking incidents on record, according to data cited by DefiLlama and CertiK Alert. Attacks accelerated late in the month, with at least one exploit reported each day since April 25.

A major case involved Drift Protocol, where North Korean spies spent months meeting employees in person before a $285 million theft that was described as the largest social-engineering attack ever recorded against a crypto protocol. TRM Labs said North Korean hackers accounted for 76% of all crypto hack losses in 2026.
