The US has overtaken Saudi Arabia to become the top crude exporter again after shipping more than 250 million barrels overseas in the past nine weeks, as the near closure of the Strait of Hormuz throttles Middle Eastern supplies. Tankers have loaded in Alaska and along the US Gulf Coast before heading to destinations including Japan, Thailand and Australia.

The surge is raising questions about how long such export levels can be sustained. US oil and fuel stockpiles have fallen for four straight weeks to below historical averages, while domestic producers are struggling to keep up.
