US Naval Blockade Cuts Iranian Oil Exports by More Than 80%
Shipping data and analyst estimates indicate a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports has sharply curtailed Tehran's crude exports, stranding a growing stockpile of oil on tankers as Iranian storage sites run out of space. Vortexa said only a handful of carriers carrying Iranian crude left the Gulf of Oman between April 13 and April 25, with about 4 million barrels estimated to have successfully moved out.
That is down more than 80% from a comparable period in March, when Iran exported 23.4 million barrels, according to LSEG data. Some vessels have switched off tracking systems and U.S. forces have turned back Iranian tankers, making it difficult to determine how much oil is reaching buyers, particularly China, while some Iranian vessels have also been intercepted by the U.S. after leaving port.
