OpenAI Misses User and Revenue Targets, Prompting Data-Center Review

aibusiness 24 posts · 19 accounts

OpenAI recently missed internal targets for new users and revenue, including a goal of reaching 1 billion weekly active ChatGPT users by the end of 2025, the Wall Street Journal reported. The company also missed multiple monthly revenue targets earlier in 2026 and fell short of its yearly revenue target for ChatGPT, according to the report.

The shortfalls prompted Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar and the board to reassess OpenAI's data-center strategy and fueled concerns about whether the company can support its spending on data centers and other AI infrastructure. Friar told other company leaders she is worried OpenAI may not be able to pay for future computing contracts if revenue does not grow fast enough, the Journal said.

OpenAI, which squandered its tremendous lead and is now missing its projections, is in trouble. There’s no two ways about it.
