U.S. Sanctions 8 Tankers and 2 Iranian Insurance Firms Over Hormuz Fees
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned eight tankers and 10 entities tied to Iran on Wednesday, targeting a Revolutionary Guard Corps-backed scheme that forced commercial vessels to buy maritime “insurance” to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
The penalties coincide with naval enforcement by U.S. Central Command, which reported redirecting 20 vessels, disabling two, and boarding two since a blockade took effect on July 14. Energy Secretary Chris Wright also stated the military is escorting oil through the waterway, citing a seven-day trailing average of 13 million barrels a day leaving the Gulf region.
