Stripe in Talks to Buy OpenRouter in $10 Billion Deal
Stripe is in discussions to acquire OpenRouter, an AI-model marketplace, in a deal that would value the company at roughly $10 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. The reported price represents a nearly eightfold increase from the startup's valuation of $1.3 billion in May.
The platform connects more than 5 million developers with hundreds of models from providers including OpenAI and Anthropic through a single interface. Stripe already processes payments and billing tools for OpenRouter, making the acquisition a move from handling AI revenue to controlling the routing infrastructure. The talks face the risk of falling apart or drawing competing bids before an announcement.
