U.S. Grants Tether July 2028 Deadline to Comply With GENIUS Act or Ban $184 Billion USDT
U.S. regulators have given Tether a compliance window until July 2028 to list its $184 billion USDT token on domestic exchanges, contingent on meeting the GENIUS Act stablecoin framework, according to CoinDesk. Missing the deadline makes the stablecoin ineligible for U.S. centralized exchanges.
The timeline follows a missed statutory deadline on July 18, when six federal agencies failed to finalize the law’s implementing rules. Full compliance would require the issuer to register with the OCC, adhere to U.S. freeze and seizure orders, and hold reserves exclusively in cash and U.S. Treasuries. Federal regulators have not yet published the final rules.
