Judge Voids Trump’s $1.78 Billion IRS Audit Settlement, Sanctions Attorneys
A US federal judge in Florida voided a proposed $1.78 billion settlement between Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service that would have granted the president and his allies immunity from tax audits. Ruling Monday, the judge determined the lawsuit over leaked tax returns lacked a genuine Article III controversy and was filed for an improper purpose.
The court also sanctioned Trump’s attorneys for alleged coordination with the Justice Department and ordered them to pay litigation costs to amici partners and 35 former federal judges. A Justice Department spokesperson rejected the collusion findings, noting the suit was filed in Trump’s personal capacity over a live dispute and that no money was disbursed.
