Zelensky Speaks to Ousted Defense Minister Fedorov as Ukraine Protests Enter Second Day
President Volodymyr Zelensky held consultations with former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov as demonstrations over the official’s dismissal enter a second consecutive day. The call follows the selection of acting security service chief Yevhen Khmara as the defense ministry’s interim replacement.
Demonstrators in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities rallied in support of Fedorov while pressing for the removal of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, who clashed with the ousted minister over military reforms. Parliament is in recess until Aug. 18, delaying parliamentary approval of Khmara’s appointment and leaving the defense post on an acting basis for more than three weeks.
