Hormuz Strait Shipping Drops to 8 Vessels as Oil Hits $82 and Freight Costs Hit Four-Year High
Confirmed vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropped to 8 on July 16, marking a three-week low, with all transits routed through the Iranian shipping lane and none using the Omani corridor. Satellite tracking and shipping data show zero confirmed crude oil flows through the strait the following day as commercial tankers halt movements amid a resumed U.S. naval blockade and Iranian military interceptions.
The shipping bottleneck is directly lifting global energy and logistics costs. WTI crude futures for August trading moved past $82 a barrel, while the rate for shipping a 40-foot container from Shanghai to Los Angeles reached $6,482, rising for 10 consecutive weeks and setting the highest level since 2024. Strategic reserves will provide a temporary buffer for markets, but sustained freight increases will ultimately squeeze corporate margins and pass through consumer prices.
