US Senate Unveils Bill to Levy 100% Tariffs on Top Russian Oil Buyers
US senators released a bipartisan sanctions bill authorizing the president to levy tariffs of up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, a measure explicitly targeting India and four other nations. The legislation, negotiated by a bipartisan Senate group and endorsed by the Trump administration, advances to honor the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Democratic staff reviewing the text warned that the bill applies vague criteria for identifying targeted countries, lacks any mechanism for congressional disapproval, and carries no expiration date. The measure also expands existing sanctions on Russia’s defense, energy, and financial sectors.
