Foreign Investors Pull Record $30 Billion From Korean Stocks; KOSPI Plunges 9%, SK Hynix Drops 15.4%
Foreign investors pulled a record $30 billion from South Korean stocks in June and dumped a further $10 billion in July, capping a year-to-date outflow of $110 billion. The selling accelerated the KOSPI’s 9% collapse on Monday, triggering its seventh trading halt of the year, while SK Hynix posted a record 15.4% single-day decline. The selloff in the memory chipmaker dragged Samsung lower by more than 11% before a partial recovery, pushing both companies down roughly a third from their late June peaks.
The capital withdrawal contributed to a $46 billion outflow from emerging market equities in June, pushing the South Korean won near its lowest levels since 2009. While domestic retail investors purchased roughly $8.8 billion in KOSPI shares this month to absorb the selling, the rapid decline has already forced broker liquidations across leveraged retail accounts. The volatility follows SK Hynix’s recent $26.5 billion U.S. listing, with both Samsung and the chipmaker now erasing all gains from their June rallies.
