US Sanctions Iranian Financier Ali Ansari and Five Companies Linked to Supreme Leader After Hormuz Shipping Attacks
On Friday, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Iranian financier Ali Ansari and five companies, adding him to a blacklist that includes seven other individuals managing billions of dollars annually for the Iranian regime. OFAC designated Ansari, exchange houses and front companies based in Dubai, Hong Kong and Saint Kitts and Nevis for facilitating wealth diversion and managing assets linked to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards, while issuing a general license to wind down operations for a Saint Kitts-based holding firm tied to Ansari.
The designation overturns a previous pact that froze new sanctions on Iranian financial figures, effectively ending the U.S. commitment to the arrangement as a retaliation for Tehran’s recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration will use every financial tool at its disposal to isolate regime elites from the global banking system and preserve sanctioned assets for the Iranian public.
