U.S. Treasury Revokes Iranian Oil Export Waiver After Hormuz Tanker Attacks, Halts New Deals From July 7
The U.S. Treasury Department revoked General License X on Tuesday, ending the temporary sanctions waiver that authorized the production and sale of Iranian crude oil and petrochemical products. The Office of Foreign Assets Control replaced the waiver with General License X1, which bars new Iranian oil transactions on or after July 7 and limits the wind-down period to 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on July 17.
The revocation follows a U.S. official's warning that Tehran's recent attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz were 'wholly unacceptable' and will trigger consequences. The decision reimposes sanctions on a cornerstone of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding less than 20 days after its signing, drawing sharp condemnation from Iran's Foreign Ministry as a violation of the war-ending agreement. Global crude prices reacted immediately, with Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude jumping more than 5%, pushing WTI to $72 a barrel and Brent to $76 a barrel.
