Tencent Signs $3 Billion Memory Deal With CXMT
Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has signed a long-term supply agreement with Tencent Holdings worth more than 20 billion yuan ($3 billion), according to people familiar with the matter. The contract is valued ahead of CXMT’s upcoming stock market debut, which is expected to be one of the year’s largest initial public offerings in China. The agreement underscores intensifying demand within the country’s technology sector, with CXMT also reportedly negotiating supply deals with Alibaba Cloud, ByteDance, and Xiaomi.
The Tencent deal comes shortly after reports revealed Apple was lobbying the Trump administration for clearance to purchase DRAM memory from the Chinese chipmaker. CXMT operates three DRAM fabrication plants with a combined monthly capacity of approximately 300,000 wafers. However, analysts note that the company has shifted the majority of its production toward DDR memory to support domestic data centers, which are experiencing severe memory shortages driven by AI infrastructure buildouts. As a result, the $3 billion supply agreement with Tencent is unlikely to alleviate the DRAM allocation pressures Apple has been facing, which previously triggered significant price increases across its Mac and iPad lines.

@jukan05
@jukan05@BenBajarin Recently, Samsung has been supplying a lot of DRAM to Apple.
@jukan05@BenBajarin Wasn’t SK hynix originally the primary supplier?
@jukan05@Alex_Intel_ That would be like voluntarily abandoning the U.S. memory industry.

@markgurmanPower On: Apple’s sweeping price increases bring home the costs of the AI era for many people for the first time.
@markgurmanThere’s no question that ChatGPT has created value. But the costs are now becoming real to many customers for the first time: pricier devices, tighter component availability and an industry now shaped around serving AI infrastructure rather
@markgurmanThe irony is that Apple never wanted this version of the AI era in the first place. Apple has mostly leaned into running as much AI on-device as possible and has only recently dramatically expanded into cloud processing for the new Siri AI.
