Portugal has officially launched “Amalia,” the country’s first open-source artificial intelligence language model. Unveiled by the Portuguese government, the project is designed specifically to process Portuguese text and generate code, addressing a local language gap in global AI development.

The release marks the completion of objectives set 18 months ago, according to project lead Gonçalo Matias. It also positions Portugal alongside other European Union nations racing to develop domestic AI infrastructure, reducing reliance on foreign technology providers in what officials have termed a push for tech sovereignty.
