Palantir CEO Alex Karp Advocates for Open Source AI as Critics Note Zero Hugging Face Releases
Palantir CEO Alex Karp advocated for the development of American open-source AI models, drawing immediate scrutiny over the software company's own lack of contributions to the open artificial intelligence ecosystem. Within hours, Hugging Face chief executive Clem Delangue noted that while Karp is publicly championing open weights, Palantir currently lists zero open-source models and zero public datasets on Hugging Face's hub, the central platform for sharing AI foundation models and code.
The advocacy emerges days after Palantir published an eight-point manifesto on AI sovereignty. In the document, the company argued that retaining control of proprietary data and model weights is essential for institutional choice and competitive advantage, warning that transferring them to external providers undermines data sovereignty. While industry observers have called for a government or consortium-backed effort to build publicly available foundation models, critics point out a disconnect between Palantir's policy stance and its current product strategy.
