Taiwan Detains Two Super Micro Employees in Nvidia Chip Smuggling Probe
Taiwanese prosecutors detained two employees of Super Micro Computer Inc. and one manager from server distributor Albatron Technology Co. following the raid of the US company’s local offices earlier this week. The detentions mark an escalation in an investigation into the alleged illegal export of Nvidia Corp. artificial intelligence chips to mainland China.
Keelung District Prosecutors said Monday's raids expanded to cover the residences of six individuals and three affiliated companies, including data center operator Chief Telecom. Authorities are examining whether Super Micro’s servers were used to transport Nvidia’s advanced AI chips in violation of US export controls. Super Micro Computer’s shares fell more than 9% on the day prosecutors announced the raid. Taipei has faced mounting pressure from Washington to tighten restrictions on AI chip exports, and prosecutors are currently considering whether to criminalize the trade directly.
