Federal Judge Blocks Trump Administration From Implementing Proof of Citizenship to Vote
Boston-based federal judge Denise Casper issued a sweeping order Wednesday barring the Trump administration from implementing most of its executive order on elections, including a requirement for voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship. Casper, a District Court judge appointed by President Barack Obama, concluded that the Constitution does not grant the president any specific powers over elections. The Department of Justice is expected to quickly appeal the ruling.
The decision adds to a series of judicial setbacks for the administration's election policy initiatives. Earlier this week, another federal judge blocked the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration from deploying an expanded voter verification system known as SAVE, ruling that the program unlawfully consolidated millions of Americans' Social Security numbers and citizenship data while violating federal privacy protections.
