OpenAI Agrees to US Approval Process for GPT-5.6 Release as Anthropic Regains Access
OpenAI published details Saturday confirming it agreed to stagger the release of its upcoming GPT-5.6 large language model, following a US government request to review cybersecurity concerns. According to the company's official blog post, the AI developer will adopt a selective approval process for the launch, initially restricting access to a limited preview for roughly 20 enterprise partners on Amazon Web Services' Bedrock platform. The Commerce Department and related agencies will approve customer access on a case-by-case basis before the model reaches a broader audience.
The controlled rollout marks the second consecutive directive for frontier AI labs to throttle releases, coming just weeks after OpenAI temporarily paused development discussions over safety disagreements. It coincides with rival Anthropic moving to restore access to its most advanced models, which were suspended in mid-June. Axios reported that the Trump administration is close to reinstating access to Anthropic's Claude Fable 5, while Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has already lifted export restrictions on Claude Mythos 5 for trusted US organizations, national laboratories, and foreign researchers affiliated with approved partners.
