US Energy Secretary Says Easing Iranian Oil Sanctions Adds Limited Economic Benefit
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Thursday that temporarily easing sanctions on Iranian oil would yield only limited economic benefits for Tehran, noting that the country is already exporting between 1.5 million and 2 million barrels per day despite existing restrictions.
The comments accompany a 60-day U.S. sanctions waiver that allows Iran to resume crude shipments to Asian buyers and unfreeze a portion of its overseas reserves. Under the arrangement, funds initially routed through Qatar will be overseen by the Treasury and recycled into American food and medicine exports. While Washington has outlined the economic framework, Wright’s assessment underscores that the sanctions relief primarily addresses logistical bottlenecks rather than unlocking significant new revenue streams for Iran.
