NVIDIA to Debut 800V Power Rack for Vera Rubin AI Platform
NVIDIA plans to debut an 800V high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power rack as an optional configuration for its Vera Rubin AI platform in the third quarter of 2026, according to research firm TrendForce. The power architecture shift addresses rapidly scaling energy demands within NVIDIA's hardware lineup. Conventional rack power supply units can currently handle Vera Rubin's expected consumption of roughly 225 kilowatts, but the transition to the Vera Rubin Ultra generation in late 2027 will drive power draws to approximately 660kW per rack. Future air-cooled systems may require as much as 1.2MW to 1.3MW.
The move aligns with NVIDIA's co-design strategy to support hyperscale data centers that are aggressively expanding across North America. While generation capacity remains sufficient in most U.S. power markets, transmission bottlenecks and interconnection queues lasting over five years are delaying gigawatt-scale campus deployments. Transformer lead times have also doubled to around 2.5 years for standard equipment and up to five years for high-voltage units. Adopting an 800V power delivery system will allow NVIDIA and its cloud partners to distribute megawatt-level power more efficiently and reduce strain on aging grid infrastructure.
