US Allows Anthropic to Release Claude Mythos 5 AI Model to 100 Approved Organizations
The U.S. Commerce Department has authorized AI startup Anthropic to redeploy its Claude Mythos 5 cybersecurity model to more than 100 approved organizations, lifting an export restriction imposed earlier this month. Access for the restricted group was cleared via a letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic chief compute officer Tom Brown, which stated that federal officials had determined the company had established appropriate safeguards for the model's use.
The authorization permits the technology to be used by selected Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, critical infrastructure operators, and vetted security research partners. Under the revised licensing terms, the export block no longer applies to Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees or to vetted staff at the approved U.S. institutions, allowing developers at these specific firms to regain API access. The exact list of the 100+ organizations remains undisclosed by Commerce.
Claude Fable 5, Anthropic’s other frontier language model, remains under export controls as ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration continue. The original June 12 restriction was triggered after Commerce Secretary Lutnick determined that both AI systems required specific licensing for any transfer to foreign nationals, which complicated Anthropic’s international API access and forced the company to suspend global usage while it negotiated new compliance protocols.
