LeptonAI Founder Leaves NVIDIA One Year After $700 Million Acquisition

The founder and CEO of LeptonAI has left the artificial-intelligence software company, marking a departure about a year after NVIDIA acquired the startup for approximately $700 million. The exit represents an early shakeup for a deal intended to expand NVIDIA's enterprise software and data-center management capabilities.

According to analysis firm SemiAnalysis, the departure coincides with stalled plans to open-source Lepton's core platform, a milestone NVIDIA publicly committed to by 2026. Analysts suggest the founder may have left over disagreements regarding that pledge, alongside weaker-than-expected adoption of DGX Lepton, a platform designed to simplify model training on NVIDIA hardware. Lepton's CEO, a co-creator of machine learning frameworks including PyTorch and ONNX, departed while still early in a typical executive vesting schedule.

BREAKING NEWS: The Founder/CEO of LeptonAI has left only a year after LeptonAI’s acquisition. This is quite shocking, as Jensen reportedly spent $700M acquiring LeptonAI. What did he see? DGX Lepton flopped and got nowhere near the success

@semianalysis_

Initially, NVIDIA claimed that Lepton’s core software platform would be open-sourced by 2026. That has yet to happen. While we were skeptical, we wanted to believe that NVIDIA would open-source the core Lepton software platform, given that

@semianalysis_

One speculation for why Lepton’s CEO left is that Jensen ultimately changed his mind and did not approve open-sourcing Lepton. In acquisitions, standard practice is for vesting to happen over multiple years. 3/7🧵

So either Lepton’s CEO leaving after only a year means he is leaving a lot of money on the table, or he initially negotiated a vesting schedule where he fully vested within one year. 4/7🧵

While we were initially quite positive about Lepton’s direction back in March 2025, we are not surprised that NVIDIA’s product management culture did not let Lepton bloom into what it could have become. 5/7🧵

@semianalysis_

This is just one of the many ML platform companies NVIDIA has bought, only for its culture to ruin them and prevent them from blooming. Back in mid-2025, we were afraid Lepton was going to be too good and that everyone would want to switch

@semianalysis_

This all comes against the backdrop of the rise of agentic coding, which may now be able to vibe-code what these AI platforms could have filled. Even @AnushElangovan has built Spur, a drop-in, fully compatible replacement for SLURM. 7/7🧵
