OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Preview for Trusted Partners at U.S. Request
A small group of trusted partners received access on Friday to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 family — flagship model Sol and lower-cost variants Terra and Luna — through Codex, OpenAI's coding product, and the API. OpenAI said the models should become generally available in the coming weeks, but the rollout is being limited at the request of the U.S. government following pressure from the Trump administration to stagger the release.
The lineup makes Sol OpenAI's new flagship, which the company said is a step above GPT-5.5 and sets a state-of-the-art result on Terminal-Bench 2.1, a benchmark for complex command-line workflows. Terra is aimed at everyday work with performance competitive with GPT-5.5 at 2x lower cost, while Luna is positioned as a fast, lower-priced option for high-volume tasks.
Ahead of the launch, OpenAI said it previewed the models' capabilities to U.S. officials and shared the participating partners with the government. The company also described Sol as its most capable model yet for cybersecurity and said it spent more than 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours on automated testing to harden safety systems, while arguing that this kind of access process should not become the long-term default.
