Qualcomm Agrees to Acquire AI Startup Modular for $3.9 Billion
Qualcomm Inc. has agreed to acquire Modular, a startup that develops software for artificial intelligence chip architecture, in a deal valued at approximately $3.9 billion in stock. The agreement formalizes negotiations that Bloomberg first reported in late June, which initially valued the company at around $4 billion. The acquisition adds Modular’s hardware-agnostic software stack to Qualcomm’s portfolio as the chipmaker expands beyond mobile processors and connectivity into the high-growth data-center market.
Founded roughly four and a half years ago, Modular provides an open compiler layer designed to allow AI models to run efficiently across different silicon architectures, including CPUs, GPUs, and custom AI accelerators. The $3.9 billion valuation marks a substantial increase from the $1.6 billion valuation the company raised $250 million at in September 2025. Modular’s leadership noted that the transaction will support its mission to unify compute platforms across edge devices and cloud infrastructure while maintaining an open software model.
