Dow Hits Record as US-Iran Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Extends Relief Rally
The relief rally sparked by the US-Iran peace agreement reached Wall Street on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average touching a record high while crude extended its slide. Washington and Tehran said they had reached a deal to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing concern that the conflict would continue to disrupt oil flows.
The move built on overnight gains across Asia, where Japan’s Nikkei climbed above 69,000 for the first time, while Brent crude had fallen about 4% to roughly $83.80 a barrel and US stock futures advanced. Pakistan, which helped mediate the talks, has said the agreement is due to be formally signed on June 19 in Switzerland, leaving investors focused on whether the accord holds and how quickly traffic through Hormuz resumes.
