Hormuz Transits Fall to 12 as Iran Ties Reopening to Lebanon Ceasefire and Oil Waivers
Iran linked a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf’s main oil shipping chokepoint, to a sustained Lebanon ceasefire and waivers for Iranian oil sales, according to Tasnim news agency. WindwardAI maritime data showed 12 transits on June 21, down from more than 21 a day earlier, though oil cargoes were still moving through the waterway, Bloomberg reported.
Trump threatened to resume attacks if Tehran does not restrain Hezbollah allies in Lebanon and floated taking over the strait and charging tolls if US-Iran talks in Switzerland fail; Republican Senator Lindsey Graham predicted diplomacy would collapse and the US would seize the waterway by force and charge fees. Chubb Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Evan Greenberg said US efforts to open shipping channels should gradually lift traffic even though security remains an “hour to hour” matter. A US diplomat later told Axios there had been good progress on keeping Hormuz open, with talks focused on deconfliction mechanisms in Lebanon and ceasefire enforcement. S&P 500 futures fell 0.4% and Brent rose 2.2% at the open.
