Hormuz Southern Route Opens Day or Night as 18 Million Barrels of Iranian Oil Cross
Mariners can use the southern route through the Strait of Hormuz around the clock, according to guidance from the Joint Maritime Information Center, or JMIC, and the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, though both continued to warn of possible mines and ongoing clearance work. Tracking data showed a tanker carrying about 2 million barrels of Iraqi crude had crossed the strait after being stranded in the Gulf for three and a half months, while Iranian cargoes totaling 18 million barrels moved through the area where the US blockade had been in place.
JMIC kept the strait at a moderate status and advised ships to keep transponders, radar and running lights on and use VHF radio normally. Pakistan's National Hydrographic Office had warned of a mine in the Omani transit corridor a day earlier, and Iran's new passage rules under the interim US-Iran memorandum require 48-hour advance transit requests while waiving fees for 60 days.
