US Lifts Iran Maritime Blockade as 6 Million Barrels of Saudi Crude Sail Through Hormuz
US Central Command said US forces have lifted the blockade on all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports and coastal areas, ending enforcement while keeping naval ships in the area to monitor compliance with the memorandum of understanding. At least 10 commercial vessels were tracked transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday morning, with six more appearing to head out of the Persian Gulf. Those included QatarEnergy’s French-flagged LNG carrier Mraikh, and three Saudi-flagged supertankers carrying 6 million barrels of crude also sailed through.
The reopening is beginning to release trapped Gulf supply. Kuwait said it plans to raise oil production above 2 million barrels a day within a week and lift all wartime force majeure notices, while the US average gasoline price fell to $3.99 a gallon, the first time below $4 since March 30. US Vice President JD Vance said the accord provides for toll-free passage for 60 days while Oman, Iran and Gulf states work on a longer-term security framework, though traffic remains well below the pre-war average of about 135 ships a day and Iranian state TV said vessel transit still requires coordination with the Revolutionary Guards Navy.
