Trump Sets 60-Day Deadline for Final U.S.-Iran Deal, Warns Hormuz Oil Flows Could Halt
President Donald Trump said Iran has 60 days to turn the interim U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding into a final accord, warning Washington would otherwise take steps that would not make Tehran happy. He added that if talks broke down, oil would no longer be flowing out of the Strait of Hormuz.
The memorandum, signed electronically this week and now in effect, halted hostilities and opened a 60-day negotiating window while setting in motion a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the shipping chokepoint for Gulf crude. Under the text released by U.S. officials, Iran is to provide fee-free commercial passage for 60 days and restore traffic within 30 days, while the U.S. begins lifting its naval blockade and issues waivers for Iranian oil exports and related banking, shipping and insurance services. Vice President JD Vance said 12.5 million barrels of oil moved through the strait overnight, the highest since the conflict began.
