Trump Export Controls Force Anthropic to Shut Fable 5 and Mythos 5 After Amazon Warning
Anthropic has shut off access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after the Trump administration imposed export controls on national-security grounds, barring foreign nationals — including some Anthropic employees — from using the models and effectively forcing the company to disable them for all customers. Reports said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised security concerns with administration officials, and that Amazon researchers had used prompts to get Fable to reveal information about a small number of security vulnerabilities.
The dispute is becoming a test case for frontier-AI regulation. Anthropic has argued the findings did not amount to a broad jailbreak and reflected cybersecurity assistance already available from other advanced models; another report said the White House was also concerned that a China-linked group may have accessed Mythos, raising the risk of distillation. Reports have said Anthropic was given 90 minutes to comply, while more than 60 US cybersecurity experts and executives have urged officials to lift the controls and adopt transparent, science-based standards, and the European Commission is monitoring the fallout.
