Lawmakers Question Trump Export Controls That Forced Anthropic to Disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5

Members of Congress are questioning the Trump administration’s decision to impose export controls on Anthropic’s newest AI models, adding scrutiny to a policy that forced the startup to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said the company is in daily talks with administration officials over the restrictions.

The US order barred foreign nationals from accessing the systems, and the administration has tied the curbs to concerns that Fable 5’s guardrails could be bypassed and that the models could be diverted to foreign military intelligence users. Clark said future oversight of advanced AI could combine banking-style know-your-customer checks with testing before deployment, and in extreme cases allow governments and developers to slow or pause development if risks become too high.

Anthropic having Fable be export controlled is a self-inflicted wound. If you spend a bunch of time telling people how dangerous your technology is, don't be surprised when some of them agree with you.
