Anthropic Fails to Lift US Export Curbs on Fable 5, Mythos 5 After DC Talks
Anthropic said senior leaders met Trump administration officials on June 15 but failed to win relief from export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, leaving the company’s most advanced AI models offline. The curbs, which require Anthropic to suspend access by foreign nationals, remained in force after the Washington talks, though the company said both sides are working to resolve the dispute quickly.
White House AI adviser David Sacks has said Anthropic was asked to fix or de-deploy Fable after a guardrail jailbreak that officials believed could expose Mythos’s more powerful cyber capabilities. Anthropic says the identified technique surfaced only minor vulnerabilities that other public models can also find. The Washington Post reported officials had weighed export controls weeks earlier after a dispute over Mythos access for a China-linked firm, adding to concern among US allies over dependence on American frontier AI systems.
