US Export Curbs Force Anthropic to Halt Fable 5, Mythos 5 Worldwide Over Foreign Military Intelligence Fears
US export controls have forced Anthropic to keep its most advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, offline for all users after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick ordered the company to suspend exports to destinations worldwide and to all foreign nationals, wherever located. In a letter seen by Reuters, Lutnick said officials feared the models could be diverted to military intelligence users in China, Russia and other countries of concern, prompting Anthropic to shut off access globally to ensure compliance.
The dispute centers on what the government describes as a way to bypass Fable 5’s safeguards against identifying software vulnerabilities. Anthropic says the technique exposed only minor security flaws that other publicly available models can also find. The Information reported that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had raised jailbreak and other security concerns with senior Trump officials, and Anthropic sent technical staff to Washington for meetings after weekend calls. A senior White House official said lifting the export controls will likely take longer than a few days, while cyber leaders urged the US to remove the curbs.
