Trump Praises Qatar’s Iran Mediation at G7 Meeting With Emir Sheikh Tamim
President Donald Trump met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in France and praised Doha’s role in talks over Iran after Washington and Tehran said they had reached a memorandum aimed at ending their months-long war. Trump said he was impressed by how Qatar handled the conflict, while Sheikh Tamim said Qatar was always ready to help, thanked Trump for reaching a deal with Iran and said the leaders discussed Middle East security, investment and bilateral trade, which he said is set to hit $1.2 trillion.
The meeting highlighted Qatar’s expanded role in the latest diplomatic push after Washington sidelined Oman and leaned on Qatar and Pakistan as intermediaries. US and Iranian officials have said the memorandum was signed electronically and is due to be formalized in Switzerland on Friday, with the agreement intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and start 60 days of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program; Washington says any sanctions relief or access to frozen Iranian funds will depend on Iran fulfilling its commitments.
