Trump Defends Iran Deal Against Critics as Stocks Hit Record High, Oil Falls
President Donald Trump on Thursday defended his interim agreement with Iran against critics who said he had not been tough enough on Tehran, arguing the accord was already producing lower oil prices and a record high in the stock market. In a Truth Social post, Trump said detractors were “jealous, bad people, or stupid.”
The 14-point memorandum, now in effect after being signed electronically by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday, is meant to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and start 60 days of talks on a final agreement. It provides immediate US waivers for Iranian oil exports and related banking, insurance and transport services, while broader sanctions relief and key issues including Iran’s nuclear program are left to later negotiations; Trump has also said Washington won’t finance the accord’s proposed $300 billion development plan for Iran.
