Brent Falls 4% to $83.80, Nikkei Tops 69,000 After US-Iran Peace Deal
Asian equities and other risk assets advanced while oil slumped after Washington and Tehran said they had reached a peace deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing fears of a prolonged supply shock. Brent crude fell 4% to about $83.80 a barrel, S&P 500 futures rose 0.8% and Nasdaq futures gained 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei climbed above 69,000 for the first time, and Bitcoin topped $65,000.
Treasuries advanced across the curve and the dollar slipped as investors pared expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening, betting that lower energy prices could ease global inflation pressures. The accord is an interim deal that still awaits a formal signing on June 19 in Switzerland, according to Pakistan, leaving markets focused on whether the agreement holds and how quickly shipping through Hormuz normalizes.
