S&P 500 Falls 1.2% as Traders Bet Fed Will Hike Rates This Year
U.S. stocks ended lower after Kevin Warsh’s first Federal Reserve meeting led traders to price in tighter policy ahead. The Dow fell about 1%, the S&P 500 dropped 1.2% and the Nasdaq slid about 1.3% as investors bet the Fed’s next move would be a rate hike rather than a cut.
The Fed kept its benchmark rate unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75% in a unanimous vote, but its new projections turned more hawkish. The median year-end 2026 fed-funds forecast rose to 3.8% from 3.4% in March, above the current range, and nine of 18 policymakers penciled in at least one increase. Warsh also dropped forward guidance from the policy statement, while officials raised their 2026 PCE inflation forecast to 3.6% from 2.7% and no longer saw inflation returning to the 2% target until 2028.
