Anthropic’s Fable 5 May Be Open-Sourced June 16 After US Export Curbs
A claim surfaced early Monday that Anthropic’s Fable 5 would be open-sourced on June 16, potentially opening a new path for the model after US export controls forced it offline. The development follows Anthropic’s decision to send senior technical staff to Washington to try to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 through talks with White House officials.
The dispute began after the US government ordered Anthropic to suspend access to both models for foreign nationals, including its own foreign-national employees, on national-security grounds tied to a reported jailbreak. Anthropic then disabled Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers, saying it had no practical way to enforce the restriction user by user, while keeping its other Claude models online and arguing the cited capability was narrow and already available in other systems.
