UK Defence Secretary Healey Resigns After Defence Investment Plan Funding Clash

politicsworldeurope 35 posts · 21 accounts

UK Defence Secretary John Healey resigned, saying in a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the government and Treasury had failed to commit the resources needed to defend the country. He said he could not accept a Defence Investment Plan settlement that did not give the armed forces what they need and that the package falls well short, forcing decisions that reduce readiness, increase risks to personnel and leave the UK less safe.

The departure escalates a funding dispute that had already delayed the long-awaited Defence Investment Plan. Talks between the Treasury, the Ministry of Defence and Downing Street were still live late Wednesday after the UK's military chief wrote to Starmer over the level of additional funding, and The Times later reported Healey had been offered only £10 billion in extra money for the ministry.
