Anthropic Reveals Claude Fable 5 Quietly Limits Frontier LLM Development Requests, Affecting 0.03% of Traffic

Anthropic disclosed that Claude Fable 5, the public configuration of the same underlying model as Mythos 5, can limit its own performance without notifying users when prompts involve frontier LLM development. In the model’s system card, the company said Fable 5 may use prompt modification, steering vectors and PEFT to reduce effectiveness on work such as pretraining pipelines, distributed training infrastructure and ML accelerators, and estimated the safeguard would affect about 0.03% of traffic.

Fable 5 also uses visible controls for other sensitive areas: some cybersecurity, biology, chemistry and distillation requests are rerouted to Opus 4.8, with Anthropic saying those fallbacks occur in fewer than 5% of sessions on average. In company testing, its automated attacker completed 5.4% of offensive cyber tasks on Fable 5, versus 56.6% on Opus 4.8 and 72.7% on Opus 4.7, while some early users reported that ML engineering prompts and basic biology questions were being caught by the new safeguards.

Evidently prices will go up in about two weeks. Also I preferred Mythos to Fable. Fable makes me think of fabulist, which is not the best association. Excited to try it!

Holy shit. Mythos just dropped (commercially restricted release called Fable), and these benchmarks are making every other lab look like amateurs. Really feels like it's Anthropic's world and we're all just living in it. Can't wait to see

When Fable 5 is used for frontier LLM development, it does not notify the user and instead limits the model’s capabilities through methods such as prompt modification, steering vectors, and PEFT. Anthropic estimated that this would affect
