SpaceX Unveils AI1 Data-Center Satellite With 150-kW Compute Payload Ahead of IPO
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk unveiled more detail on AI1, the company’s initial AI data-center satellite, saying it is designed with a 150-kilowatt peak compute payload, a 120-kilowatt average compute payload, a 150-kilowatt solar array and liquid-radiator cooling. He also outlined a manufacturing push in Bastrop, Texas, where a Gigasat factory is slated to start producing AI satellites by the end of 2027.
The update gives investors a clearer look at the orbital-computing project that has become central to SpaceX’s IPO pitch. The planned $75 billion offering had attracted about $150 billion of demand last week, and SpaceX has told investors the AI business could pursue a $23 trillion market. Musk said space-based systems could become the lowest-cost way to generate AI compute within two to three years because satellites can draw near-continuous solar power and radiate away heat in the vacuum of space.
