OpenAI Gets Early Access to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin Systems as It Builds Multi-Chip AI Software
OpenAI already has early access to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems, a new hardware milestone for the company as it develops internal software that can run AI workloads across chips from multiple providers rather than relying solely on Nvidia. The effort is aimed at a future in which AI runs across a broader mix of chip suppliers.
The project matters because Nvidia’s CUDA software ecosystem has been one of the company’s biggest competitive advantages. Compute chief Sachin Katti has described a future of heterogeneous AI infrastructure and said OpenAI is open to making the software public; OpenAI is already using or planning chips from Amazon, Cerebras, AMD and its own custom silicon, while preparing Vera Rubin clusters for training later this year.
