AI Data-Center Demand Fuels Global Memory Chip Shortage, US Business Groups Warn
A coalition of US business groups, including automakers, retailers, electronics makers and medical-device companies, warned the Treasury and Commerce departments that a global shortage of memory chips fueled by AI demand is straining supply chains. The groups said AI data centers are buying up memory chips, leaving other industries to compete for limited supply and raising the prospect of higher costs.
Because memory chips are used to store data in products such as phones, cars and laptops, the squeeze could ripple across a wide range of consumer and industrial goods. The groups said the shortage is already beginning to show up in prices and could make items including phones, cars and TVs more expensive.
