Japan May Face Naphtha-Derived Chemical Shortage by Late June, Former Trading-House Chief Warns
Japan is likely to face a shortage of naphtha-derived chemical products as early as the end of June, according to Fumiya Kokubu, a visiting fellow at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan and former head of a major trading house. Kokubu said it would be “impossible” to procure alternatives for the 15 million kiloliters of naphtha a year that Japan sourced from the Middle East before the war in the region began nearly three months ago.
The warning contrasts with the Japanese government’s view that supplies will last into next year. The disagreement centers on whether Japan can replace Middle East naphtha volumes that had supplied 15 million kiloliters a year before the conflict.
