Supreme Court Revives Mississippi Death-Row Challenge in 5-4 Ruling on Black Juror Exclusion
The US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, revived a Mississippi death row inmate’s challenge to his conviction and upheld an order invalidating his death sentence after finding that the trial judge failed to properly address claims that Black jurors were excluded because of their race.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion, reversing the Mississippi Supreme Court. Justice Neil Gorsuch dissented, joined by Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Amy Coney Barrett.
